How long should a sermon be?

There is no universally faithful sermon length. The passage, congregation, service, occasion, and preacher all matter. A time boundary can nevertheless be a pastoral gift: it forces us to distinguish what the text requires from what we merely enjoyed writing.

When revising, cut padding before substance. Preserve a short orientation to the text, clear exposition, honest application, and a conclusion that fixes the listener’s eyes on Christ rather than ending with guilt or generic advice.
