How sermon timing is estimated
The calculator counts spoken words rather than headings or delivery cues. It divides that count by your selected preaching pace, then allows time for paragraph breaks, marked pauses, and natural variation in live delivery.
A manuscript read silently or recorded at home will usually run faster than a sermon preached to a congregation. Scripture reading, prayer, response, and moments that need room to land should be included in your planning.
What is a normal preaching speed?
Many conversational sermons land around 120–150 words per minute. Reflective preaching may be slower. Narrative or highly familiar material may move faster. Rehearsing one representative section is the best way to learn your own pace.
